In the mid to late 70's,
Mego began a media blitz. They were running strong as a company, so it
would make perfect sense to advertise on TV. Mego had commercials for
every aspect of their varied line, from "Planet of the Apes"
to "Kiss", from "Ballbusters" to "Woodies"...and
thankfully the Micronauts were not left out. Mego produced a whole slew
of 30 second slots of pure heaven for any kid watching Saturday morning
cartoons. In 1978 the main idea behind the Micronaut commercials were
to show kids and parents there was no wrong way to assemble a Micronaut
toy. They had made 2 different types of commercials, one geared toward
the adult showing the "educational" value, and one toward the
child showing how cool the toys were. Well, it certainly worked. Mego
ran these spots non-stop, from January through December and spent approximately
$3,500,000 on the advertising. The best part about this whole thing was
that some of the commercials showed prototypes of toys that ended up never
being released, like Iguanos and Equestron. So some lucky kids out there
got a chance to play with some of the most rare and sought after Micronaut
toys of all time. When watching the commercials today...it's really hard
not to hate those damn kids...
